Hunts - Generalities
Hunts (mob hunts in the Japanese version) are the most important sidequest of Final Fantasy XII. Not only do they earn you very interesting equipment (sometimes exclusive to a given hunt), but they are more often than not the key to other sidequests, some optional espers, events an the most difficult bosses in the game, and they will take you to parts of Ivalice the main story will not lead you to. For all these reasons, while all save one hunts (the first) are optional, they are a must if you intend to plainly enjoy Final Fantasy XII
On this page you'll find the basics on how to proceed with your hunts

Hunts basics - How it all works
The first time you hear about hunts and marks are when you visit the Sandsea Bar and you speak with Tomaji. A monster (the target of a hunt is called a mark) is keeping the merchants from bringing goods into town in time. Therefore, Tomaji's put up a bill on the notice board of the bar that you read when you meet with Kytes there. You then meet with Tomaji who is therefore the petitioner, and he gives you information about what the mark is and where you can find it. Only then can you head out and hunt the mark. Once you're done, although the story doesn't prompt you to do so, you'll need to meet with Tomaji again to receive your rewards
Although this is your first hunt and that you're taken by the hand through most of it (and that the mark is really easy, which is more than can be said for most of the others....), this is exactly how all hunts go. You'll need to follow those simple steps:
For regular hunts
- check notice boards (several cities have one, always in the bar - they all display the same ads)
- find the petitioner and accept the contract with him
- hunt the mark
- go back to the petitioner for your reward
For Elite Marks
- talk to Montblanc at the Clan Centrio Headquarters
- talk to any other member of the clan if he recommends for you to do so
- find the petitioner and accept the contract with him
- hunt the mark
- go back to petitioner for your reward
Note: a mark doesn't appear BEFORE you've officially agreed to hunt it down for the petitioner! Just looking at the notice board or talking with Montblanc isn't enough
Not all hunts are available from the start of the game; they become so based on your clan ranking and the stage you've reached in the main story. Your clan ranking is visible from your Clan Primer (and from any save log), which is accessible from your party menu. Remember to check it often as it records everything you've learned and done about hunts at that point. Very useful once you're in the middle of the game and have half a dozen hunts opened!
One last thing to remember: more often than not, a hunt is linked to another quest: it earns you a key item, a valuable clue or opens a new area for you to visit later on. Pay attention to what yout petitioners have to say in general, as the clue may be of use only hours and hours later in the game. Or you can come here and read the various marks entries, as everything will be explained....
